OUR STORY AND MILESTONES
Elissa Scalise Powell, CG, CGL, and Deborah Lichtner Deal began GRIP’s formation in 2011 with the first institute offered in July 2012. Elissa is an experienced institute educator and Debbie had been running a week-long genealogical workshop week at the Ohio Genealogical Society Library. Although the idea to provide more in-depth education had been percolating for years, it was not until Elissa found LaRoche College that GRIP was born. With early support from colleagues, GRIP became a reality.
2012: Our first year in which we offered four courses at La Roche College, Pittsburgh. The 2012 courses pages have photographs and course descriptions. Group photos are also available. The polo shirt color was turquoise.
2013: Our first year in which we offered six courses at La Roche College, Pittsburgh. The 2013 courses have photos and detailed course schedules. The polo shirt color was aqua.
2014: Our first year in which we offered two separate weeks in two different locations, one in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with six courses in July and one in Orchard Lake, Michigan, with four courses in August. Pittsburgh saw 203 students on campus from 42 different states and three foreign countries. It was the first year that a Genetic Genealogy week-long course had been presented anywhere. The polo shirt color for women was French blue and for men, royal blue.
2015: Our first year in which two separate weeks (each with six courses) were offered both on the La Roche College campus, one the last week of June and the other the third week of July. The polo shirt color was burgundy.
2016: GRIP is 5 years old! The polo shirt color was sage green. For the first time a sponsored evening live lecture was broadcast as a free webinar at the same time by the Virtual Institute of Genealogical Research (VIGRgenealogy.com).
