OUR STORY AND MILESTONES

Elissa Scalise Powell, CG, CGL, and Deborah Lichtner Deal began GRIP’s formation in 2011 with the first institute offered in July 2012. Elissa is an experienced institute educator and Debbie had been running a week-long genealogical workshop week at the Ohio Genealogical Society Library. Although the idea to provide more in-depth education had been percolating for years, it was not until Elissa found LaRoche College that GRIP was born. With early support from colleagues, GRIP became a reality.

2012: Our first year in which we offered four courses at La Roche College, Pittsburgh. The 2012 courses pages have photographs and course descriptions. Group photos are also available. The polo shirt color was turquoise.

2013: Our first year in which we offered six courses at La Roche College, Pittsburgh. The 2013 courses have photos and detailed course schedules. The polo shirt color was aqua.

2014: Our first year in which we offered two separate weeks in two different locations, one in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with six courses in July and one in Orchard Lake, Michigan, with four courses in August. Pittsburgh saw 203 students on campus from 42 different states and three foreign countries. It was the first year that a Genetic Genealogy week-long course had been presented anywhere. The polo shirt color for women was French blue and for men, royal blue.

2015: Our first year in which two separate weeks (each with six courses) were offered both on the La Roche College campus, one the last week of June and the other the third week of July. The polo shirt color was burgundy.

2016: GRIP is 5 years old! The polo shirt color was sage green. For the first time a sponsored evening live lecture was broadcast as a free webinar at the same time by the Virtual Institute of Genealogical Research (VIGRgenealogy.com). We had 150 students in six courses in June and 195 students in seven courses in July. We celebrated our five year anniversary by honoring the 28 people who have attended GRIP each of its five years since its inception in 2012. Some people relaxed on the beautiful college grounds while others went to North Park to kayak, walk, or swim.

2017: GRIP polo shirt color of the year is light blue.

I understand the free evening lectures are also open to those who can not attend the day time sessions. Do you have to register for the evening lectures & if so where?

    • admin says:

Thank you for asking, Marcia. Each of the evening lectures is under the sponsorship of a genealogical society. As such we can make the lectures free and open to everyone. Make sure you stop by the table in the foyer to thank the sponsors in person. They may also have memberships or publications for sale. Although no registration is required, there is limited seating. We look forward to seeing you there.

Wow, I just looked at the course descriptions and am even more excited!! It looks to me like you have gathered the best educators in our genealogical field. Both my maternal and fraternal lines are very old Pennsylvania!! So, I do indeed have relatives everywhere around Pittsburgh. In fact the 60th Annual Hineman Reunion will be held on July 28th in Aliquippa, just west of Pittsburgh. Come on February!! Can’t wait to sign up!! Please be sure I am on your e-mail notification list.

      Cindy,
The best way to be notified is to sign up for email notification on the GRIP home page. I see you have done that so you should get an email about the latest news as we post it on the website.

The timing of your family reunion is wonderful. Aliquippa is not far from La Roche College in Pittsburgh North Hills (30 to 40 minutes).
