GRIP in Pittsburgh Begins in One Week!

In just one week 205 students and a dozen faculty will gather at La Roche College in Pittsburgh for “summer camp for genealogists.” And just like summer camp we will have a great time diving deep into our chosen topic of study and enjoying the experience with those of a like mind.

Registration is Sunday, July 20, from 3 to 5 pm in Bold I Hall (Dorm on the map at Please see email sent Monday morning, July 14, for details on other arrival times and Sunday schedule. Those arriving Monday: Look for the signs to point you to registration in the classroom building.

We welcome the 28% of students who have never been to any institute, the 30% who have experienced another institute and the 42% returning GRIP students. You all hail from 40 different states and three different countries (Canada, Israel, and New Zealand)!

Even so, 64% are driving, 32% are flying, and 4% are taking a train, bus, etc.

We hear that many of you are making this a road trip combined with visiting family, repositories, or ancestors’ gravesites. We hope that all such visits are successful!

So, is there anything going on Sunday, like an opening reception?

On Sunday registration is open from 3 pm to 5 pm and then dinner is served from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Those who are not dorm students can partake by paying cash at the door. At 6:30 pm there is a welcome program with information needed for the week and door prizes. (All students should have received an email on Monday morning to this effect. Check your spam box if you did not.)

After the welcome program, the Boston University Genealogical Research Certificate program alumni will be gathering. (ProGen Study group alumni will meet on Monday evening.)

The evening is a time when friendships, new and old, can be renewed. It is also national indexing day for and those who want to participate may gather in the College Center Square to work on indexing together. It is a wonderful way to volunteer and not miss out on the camaraderie with other genealogists. If not an indexer, then working on your own genealogy in the company of others can be great fun!
