Registration for the 23 courses being offered this summer in Pittsburgh, PA, and in Amherst, NY (Buffalo) will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 14. In the past, students from 48 states and three countries have attended these week-long, hand-on, in-depth courses on various genealogical topics and at all levels– from intermediate through advanced. With so much interest it is not unusual that popular courses sell out within minutes. If that happens to your first choice, register for your second choice and then get on the wait-list for your first choice. Be aware of GRIP’s policy that to transfer courses within the same week has no charge but to transfer between weeks incurs a $20 charge.
To help speed you through the registration process, take a close look at the Registration page which gives great advice, gives you a heads-up on the questions you will be asked (hint: they have changed!), has pictures of the polo and denim shirts available, and their size chart. Make your decisions and write them down. You can also prepare text for the questionnaire and copy and paste it into the registration form when the time comes.
Make sure to hit the “Proceed to Checkout” button and on the summary page and finalize your transaction which should generate an email confirmation to you. Turn your pop-up blocker off temporarily and be *very* patient with the time it takes to create the invoice. Like “go get a cup of coffee” patience and time.
The countdown clock is set to open the June courses at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. When you watch it expire at 11 a.m. (Eastern), you will automatically be taken to the registration system for the June courses ONLY. The clock should reset for 1 p.m. (Eastern) for the July courses. And then again reset for 3 p.m. (Eastern) for the August courses in Amherst, New York. If you are registering for more than one week, you *will* need to reenter the questionnaire answers since they are not shared between the different weeks.
For a sneak peak at what the registration screens will look like, you may study this 5-page handout: 2018 GRIP REGISTRATION SCREENS which captures each week’s registration order form plus the questionnaire.
New this year in addition to the traditional polo shirt for “shirt day” class photos is a long-sleeved denim shirt. You may order different sizes for each if you want the denim shirt to be more like a light jacket. Both have the GRIP logo embroidered on them.
For the New York on-campus housing, you can list in the questionnaire up to three other people to share the apartment with. Each person has their own bedroom and there are four bedrooms in one apartment. (See more info here.)
So between now and registration time, 1.) talk with your friends since “summer camp for genealogists” is always more fun with friends! 2.) Decide on your first and second choice courses. 3.) Read all of the registration page and five-page handout. 4.) Pre-enter your contact information if you have never been to GRIP or have done so already. 5.) Navigate to the countdown clock page just before the appointed hour, and 6.) register for a great experience at the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh!
To keep abreast of GRIP news, converse with others who are thinking about going, and ask any questions, you can join the Facebook group where they have already voted on this year’s polo shirt color: Navy blue. It is also a great place to say on Wednesday, “I got in! Who else is with me?!”
