Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh Announces the Donn Devine, JD, CG Emeritus, FNGS, Scholarship

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Pittsburgh, PA – In the spirit of Thanks-Giving, Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP) is excited to announce the Donn Devine, JD, CG Emeritus, FNGS, Scholarship, honoring a leader and volunteer in the genealogical community who passed away 5 May 2019. This scholarship will enable one applicant who has never been to GRIP to attend with a full scholarship of tuition and on-campus housing in a shared room (total value $825). Application deadline is January 1 with the winner notified by February 1.

GRIP believes this scholarship will reward a genealogist who has emulated Donn Devine’s giving spirit of volunteerism with a gift of one of the GRIP week-long genealogical education courses to be chosen by the recipient.

Applicants should email [email protected] by January 1 with name, address, email, your profession, past institutes attended (if any), and how you learned of the scholarship, along with no more than a 500-word essay stating your volunteer activities and how you will use the education from the GRIP course to preserve the legacy of Donn Devine. The winner will be determined by the GRIP leadership and their decision is final.

In 2012, GRIP offered its first week of courses. Shortly afterward, one of the course coordinators, John Humphrey, CG, passed away. Of this Donn Devine said at the time, “John was one of those people who made the collegiality of the genealogical community a reality.” We can also say the same thing about Donn. His wisdom and brilliant mind were often consulted—and he gave his advice (both legal and genealogical) and time freely to help better the genealogy world.

GRIP provides hands-on, week-long learning opportunities in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. “Summer camp for genealogists” fosters not only education but networking among students and faculty, encouraging each person to be the best genealogist they can and pursue whatever goals they have set for themselves.
